What is STEM?

"A common definition is STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy. (Tsupros, 2009)" See NSTA article.

4. Do not carry lighters or other flammable articles with you to the lab.
5. Students must handle equipment properly and follow safety guidelines as instructed by Ms. Jelinek. NO unauthorized experiment is allowed. Students will follow directions and strict safety procedures at all times or they will be excused from lab work with no score.

Communication
1. Please let me know if your student will be absent or late. If the decision is made right before class, please text me. I don't answer my phone right before or during class.  If you know earlier, please call (same number) or email. I am very concerned if I don't know why your student is absent or late for class.
2.Communicate is exclusively via email. If there is an academic or behavioral concern, I will personally call you. Please check your email often especially the day before class.
3. I would like to have student emails.
4. Cell phones, iPods and other electronics are not allowed to be used in class. The devices are placed in a basket at the beginning of class. If I find them in use, I will hold the device until the parent comes to collect it.

As always, I am here for you and your student. Please let me know how I can further assist to make this a positive experience. Please encourage your student to contact me when they are struggling with a concept. I have means to meet online with a white board with your student or we can simply email or discuss problems on the phone.
