Everyday Chemistry meets Tuesdays 9:55 - 11:25 AM in Collierville only

Welcome to the adventure of chemistry! Below I have outlined several details.
This course is for students who have difficulty with math, those planning to attend a two year degree or technical program, or majoring in a non-science degree at a four year college. Meets HS science requirement. This conceptual course focuses on everyday chemical uses in home and society.
Registration
For Collierville location, attend designated registration dates at Faith Lutheran Church. Not available at Memphis Homeschool Tutorial for 2014-15 school year.
Class Details
Collierville classes begins on Tuesday, August 5th. Classes starts at 9:55 am. Please be in your seat with assignments turned in five minutes before class. We have much to do and I don't wait for students to arrive. Tardiness will affect the homework grade.
Textbook
Chemistry Matters (1st edition) is designed for the development and reinforcement of high school chemistry lessons. Real-life applications of Chemistry are showcased to make learning meaningful, while comprehensive content is presented in a concise, visually appealing manner. Hands-on and IT activities encourage students to work independently and extend their learning. Chem-Aid sidebar notes are designed to correct students' misconceptions', while worked examples and practice questions guide students in applying the new concepts learnt. Safety
1. Goggles must be worn by every student. The goggles will fit over eyeglasses. They must be worn at all times even when the lab doesn’t use caustic chemicals.
2. Closed toed shoes must be worn. Do NOT wear shorts even in August, April and May. Remember to follow the dress code.
3. Safety equipment will be on hand: fire extinguisher and eye wash station.
4. Purchase a pair of rubber gloves which fit your hand size for chemical handling.
5. Reading the lab thoroughly before class will also prevent accidents. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) will be on hand for safety precautions of all chemicals.
6. Do not carry lighters or other flammable articles with you to the lab.
7. A safety contract will be signed by the parent and student. Bring the lab safety contract signed by parent and student to the first class.
Assignments
1. There will be no excuse late assignments unless there is an extended illness or family emergency. I will need to have an email or phone call from a parent if something like this should occur. Out-of-town trips should be anticipated, and the work turned in early. Getting one week behind in this course would make it difficult to catch up. Each module builds on the next like a math course. It is very different from Biology where one module had little to do with the next. Any late assignment will be subject to point deduction.
2. Parents will check the homework and email me the errors every other week when the homework is due. This email must be received by Sunday evening at 9 PM for Cordova; Monday evening at 9 PM for Collierville. This timely email affords your student one extra credit point on the test. Points are usually worth 2-4% of the grade.
3. Assignments are submitted in a red two pocket folder. Every other week homework, test documents, and other assignments are submitted prior to the start of class. There will be no catching up during lecture.
4. Please review and sign the agreement for chemistry and bring to the first day of class.
5. Tests are administered by the parent. Tests in the solutions guide may be used as study helps prior to the test. Once completed, they should be held by the parent and submitted the next Tuesday.
6. There is homework to be completed during class. Please follow assignment schedule.
Grading
50% Chapter Quizzes/Tests
30% Lab Reports
15% Homework, Class Attendance/Timeliness, Preparation
5% Notebook Neat and Organized with all sections complete
Grades are available to parents 24/7 at the Engrade website. Once I have the new year class set-up, I will email instructions for log-in. I encourage you to check it often as a tool to monitor your student's progress. I do not remind student's of late work. It is their responsibility to know the assignments that are due.
Extra Credit
Extra credit assignments will be offered occasionally.
Supplies Needed
TI-84 Scientific calculator. Bring to every class!
3-ring binder and paper
Notebook Dividers for: Notes, Homework, Tests, and Labs
TWO(2) YELLOW paper two pocket folder for homework.
Rubber gloves (kitchen type)
Laminate of the Periodic Table for your notebook.
Quad ruled spiral notebook
Lab Supplies
The students will have a lab partner for the year. Each lab team will have a set of lab supplies. The lab team is responsible to keep the glassware clean and intact. They take turns carrying these supplies home and bringing them back to class the next week. We do not have storage for all those supplies. I will order extra supplies in case of breakage; however, the student is responsible for the replacement cost. The lab fee for this class is higher than most as I use additional labs outside of the Apologia coursework that involve more expensive chemicals as well as technology. I also provide a quad-ruled bound notebook for a lab notebook.
Students will complete chemistry lab exercises with Vernier probeware including thermometer, pH meter, gas pressure sensore, conductivity meter, and others. Probeware increases student understanding of science concepts, encourages inquiry learning the laboratory, and frees class time for student engagement in higher order thinking skills, such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
